In the beginning there was mainframe; and it was good. On the second day Lord Jobs and Lord Wozniak gathered up the
fruits of their humble abode and created Apple; the masses rejoiced at their new freedom. On the third day the Almighty
Bill created Microsoft; this caused the people to turn their backs on the Apple for they know not what they do. On the
last day, the Ten Commandments were created in an attempt to redeem the souls of those peoples.
Here are those Ten Commandments:
Regularly update your Operating System to the Latest level of Patches. Majority of the PC users use Microsoft products
as their OS. The Windows operating system has lots of vulnerabilities and you can protect your PC by checking the Microsoft
website for the latest Hot Fixes. Some of these Hot Fixes are not needed, so the best would be check what the latest Hot
Fixes and update those which are needed, depending on your application.
Update your browser for latest patches and fixes. Most of the viruses and trojan horse installation takes place through
email and normal browsing. If your browser is update to date, this would be a added protection for your PC.
Just like windows operating system, Internet Explorer is the most widely used browser. For the same reason, most of the
viruses and vulnerabilities are written to exploit windows operating systems and internet explorer. Using other browsers
like Mozilla Firefox and Opera might minimize your risk.
First thing a user should do when switching on the computer for the first time is to install a good Antivirus software
& a firewall on your computer and make regular updates by clicking Start > All Programs > Windows Update or
Microsoft Update. To update your Mac click on the Apple button > Software Update. This is a must. Also make sure that
you update the antivirus software at regular intervals. The best practice is to automate this process. This way you don’t
have to check everyday whether any updates have released. The software will do it for you. If you don’t have a antivirus
software, you can download free antivirus softwares which might well serve the purpose like AVG, but for tighter security
download a good security software that doesn’t leave a big footprint on the system memory. We strongly advise to avoid using
Norton & Mcafee don’t let the appearances deceive you, instead use something like Eset smart security the best security
software in our opinion, Kaspersky internet security, both of them are pretty good they also come with anti-virus, anti-spyware
& a firewall built in. For single firewall there’s ZoneAlarm & Comodo both are free and will keep your computer
safe from attacks.
Scan your computer for viruses on a regular basis. The best practice will be to automate this process so that the antivirus
program will scan your computer when you are not using your machine, for example, in the night when you are sleeping or
during your lunch break. Avoid using peer-2-peer programs like Limewire, emule etc. Content on these networks are not
filtered therefore you’ll be open to viruses and other malicious software. Instead use a torrent client like utorrent
the best bit torrent client in our opinion.
The most popular source for the spread of viruses and vulnerabilities is through email. Make sure that your emails, both
incoming and outgoing are scanned. More importantly, do not open any attachments unless you are sure that is not an
unknown .exe file. Scan your attachments before opening them.
Don’t use your PC in administrator mode for normal browsing or day to day use. Some of the viruses and vulnerability codes
require administrative access to execute. Your machine might be infected, but if the user logged in doesn’t have
administrative access, your PC might incur damages. This is just another added precaution.
Install a good anti-malware program on your computer and do regular scans. Even the best antivirus softwares might not be
up to date in terms of malware detection. Malware softwares are by far the most dangerous in nature, they are designed to
infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It can open up your private life and even
lead to identity theft.
Beware of pop ups on the web telling you your computer is infected, or that it needs cleaning up, these are all spyware
programs disguised as anti-virus or pc boosters while their sole purpose is to infect your computer and steal information
without you noticing.
Be cautious in online chat rooms and IRCs. Do not accept files through file transfer from strangers, for example Yahoo Chat.
A safer way would be to request them to send it as an email. And where possible, try to use the numerous email services
available like Yahoo Mail, Gmail etc. These email servers would automatically scan a file before downloading to your PC.
In the case of your ISP related and personal domain related emails, every provider across the globe might not scan your
attachments and files for you.
